US Sailing’s prestigious Multihull Championship, competing for the historic Hobie Alter Cup, returns to the dynamic waters of Corpus Christi, focusing this year on the popular Formula Wave class.
The U.S. Multihull Championship, one of US Sailing’s marquee national competitions, is gearing up for its 2025 edition. The event, which crowns the nation’s top multihull sailor, will take place from November 3 to November 7, 2025, hosted by the Corpus Christi Yacht Club in Corpus Christi, Texas.
This annual championship not only determines a national title but also carries the weight of a rich tradition, awarding the coveted Hobie Alter Cup.
The Legacy: Honoring a Multihull Pioneer
The championship’s perpetual prize, the Hobie Alter Cup, was established in 1986 in honor of Hobie Alter Sr., recognizing his extraordinary influence and promotion of one-design multihull sailing and racing programs across the United States.
Over the decades, the event has featured a distinguished roster of competitors, including Olympic medalists, world champions from various classes, and numerous national champions from the multihull ranks, cementing its status as one of the most prestigious titles in American sailing. Past winners include legendary names such as Randy Smyth and Matt Struble.
A Tradition of Class Rotation
A key feature of the U.S. Multihull Championship is its rotation through various multihull classes each year. This system ensures the competition accurately reflects the depth and diversity of multihull sailing across the country. In its early years, the regatta relied on manufacturers like Hobie, Nacra, and Prindle to provide new boats, but since 2013, it has deliberately rotated classes to highlight different segments of the sport.
2025 Focus: The Formula Wave Challenge
For the 2025 event, the championship will be sailed exclusively in Formula Wave Class boats, marking a return to this popular and accessible multihull platform. The Corpus Christi Yacht Club, renowned for its excellent sailing conditions on Corpus Christi Bay, will partner with the Formula Wave Class to host the competitors.
Unlike many championships that require a strict qualification process, the U.S. Multihull Championship remains an open event, inviting all eligible sailors to compete for the national title. However, U.S. citizens and resident-aliens must maintain US Sailing membership, while other nationalities must be members of their respective National Governing Body. The 2025 event is designated as a “bring your own boat” competition.
